Dissolved methane in anaerobic effluent: Emission or recovery?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Abstract Various anaerobic processes have been explored for the energy-efficient treatment of municipal wastewater. However, dissolved methane in effluent appears to be a barrier towards energy and carbon neutrality wastewater treatment. Although several recovery methods developed, their engineering feasibility economic viability not yet assessed holistic manner. In this perspective, we thus intend offer additional insights into cost-benefit against its emission.

The world currently obtains its energy from the fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas and coal. However, the international crisis in the Middle East, rapid depletion of fossil fuel reserves as well as climate change have driven the world towards renewable energy sources which are abundant, untapped and environmentally friendly. Malaysia has abundant biomass resources generated from the agricult...
متن کاملAnaerobic treatment of municipal wastewater at ambient temperature: Analysis of archaeal community structure and recovery of dissolved methane.
Anaerobic treatment is an attractive option for the biological treatment of municipal wastewater. In this study, municipal wastewater was anaerobically treated with a bench-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor at temperatures from 6 to 31 °C for 18 months to investigate total chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency, archaeal community structure, and dissolved methane (D-...

متن کاملDissolved methane in Indian freshwater reservoirs.
Emission of methane (CH4), a potent greenhouse gas, from tropical reservoirs is of interest because such reservoirs experience conducive conditions for CH4 production through anaerobic microbial activities. It has been suggested that Indian reservoirs have the potential to emit as much as 33.5 MT of CH4 per annum to the atmosphere. However, this estimate is based on assumptions rather than actu...
متن کاملAnaerobic methane oxidation in low-organic content methane seep sediments
Sulfate-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) is the key sedimentary microbial process limiting methane emissions from marine sediments and methane seeps. In this study, we investigate how the presence of low-organic content sediment influences the capacity and efficiency of AOM at Bullseye vent, a gas hydrate-bearing cold seep offshore of Vancouver Island, Canada. The upper 8 m of sed...
